Since 1924, the Wisconsin Alumni Association has hosted Founders’ Day celebrations in honor
of UW-Madison’s beginnings and first official class, held 161 years ago. Join other UW-Madison
alumni at Founders’ Day as we celebrate and continue the traditions that make us proud
Badgers.
This year's event is:

At one time, Hollywood comprised five or six free-standing studios, the likes of Warner Bros.,
20th Century-Fox, and Paramount Pictures, which dominated the motion picture business.
Today, the studios are subsumed by media conglomerates, the likes of Time Warner, News
Corp., and Viacom, and are just parts of many profit centers of their parent companies. The
merger movement, which began in the 1960s, has yet to run its course. This presentation will
discuss the impact of the mergers on the production policies of the studios.
Tino Balio is Emeritus Professor of Communication Arts at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
A specialist in the history of the American film industry, Balio is the author or editor of six books,
including a two-volume history of United Artists, The American Film Industry, Hollywood in the
Age of Television, and Grand Design: Hollywood as a Modern Business Enterprise, 1930-1939.
The 2001 recipient of the inaugural Academy Film Scholar Grant from the Academy of Motion
Picture Arts and Sciences, Balio has recently completed a book tentatively entitled, “The U.S. Art
Film Market, 1946-1973,” which will be published by the University of Wisconsin Press in fall
2010.
